Social networks
Posted by The Bridge
A social network in relation to Internet applications is a web-service that connects different users worldwide. It provides users the option to create a profile, where they are able to present themselves, share ideas, activities, events and interests within their individual networks. In these networks they are able to state information about themselves and often they also can upload pictures, songs and videos.
There are a lot of different networks all over the world. One of the most popular and most used networks is called facebook. A social network can be conceived as a spider’s web that is woven between a lot of users or clients and a client/server network.
A user can decide what he or she wants to publish on a profile. Usually it requires stating a valid e-mail address and a user name. For using an account it is also necessary to set a keyword.
As you can see here on the registration web page of „kwick“ it also needs to indicate the gender and the date of birth. Other well-known social networks are e.g. facebook, friendster or myspace.
Other particulars can be published at one’s pleasure. But certainly these data cannot be verified. So people can state whatever they want. Often people state wrong information about them or even create a pseudo-profile. In some cases this fact can be a problem, especially on dating networks. Principally you cannot be sure who you get in touch with. So it is advisable to be careful to trust somebody you meet within one of these networks and also be careful which data you publish about yourself. Some people are such gullible that they disclose too much of their particulars like a complete address or even bank account data. Information and other data which have been uploaded once are difficult to remove again. People could get a bad idea of you by visiting your profile. As well it might happen that you do not get a job only because a potential employer bumps into some shady information about you. You can check out what information you can find about yourself by googleling your name. Maybe you will be surprised how much you will find about yourself.
Some people spend a lot of time with social networks. The first thing they do after booting up the pc is to log in their account and look for messages or something else. Especially young people who have problems integrating themselves feel more brave and confident within these networks. Furthermore mobbing or cyber-bullying can be a serious problem within social networks.
Except for socializing to new contacts, you are able to establish contact with friends or search for former or lost acquaintances. Additionally nowadays bands, movies, stars and even brands are represented in social networks and all of them can be added into a list of personal contacts or friends. Of course the operators of these profiles want to make advertisement in this way and often there is also a lot of advertisement that is displayed on the web pages of the networks. Essentially social networks subsist on advertisement and charged functions within an account.
The original social networks almost do not exist any more – by new applications or rather the inclusion of media – what makes this networks also very popular – social networks today are also called social media. Social networks meanwhile are based on media. The best example for this is youtube where every member can upload videos. Some of these videos are watched so often that they became famous for a while.
