Definition:
Cyber crime is a criminal act which is based on the Internet or which is done with the technics of the Internet.
Explanation:
More and more people use the Internet to get money or to endamage other persons. The criminals play with the curiosity, acquisitiveness or the naivety of their victims. It’s often just one click to get a victim of cybercrime.
Crime on the Internet can be divided in conscious crime and unconscious crime.
Conscious crime
Phishing:
“Phishers” are persons who pretend to be trustful. They try to get personal data such as: user names and passwords you need for online banking or chatrooms or information about credit cards. These criminals use false electronically written messages to take innocent computer users in. These messages are mostly sent per e-mail. “Phishers” call on the receivers to go to prepared websites and to give their access information away.
Protection: Deactivate the HTML-address and “Java-Script” at your e-mail programme.
Also: E-mail filters that are put in some anti-virus software can uncover and eliminate those specious messages
Hacking:
A hacker has a very good knowledge about technics, mainly based on computers. These persons use networks to obtain access to several computer systems. Then they manipulate information on websites or use them to do serious damage.
Spying:
Spying describes the criminal act of obtaining unknown information or protected knowledge. It was and still is used to get political information of other countries.
Illegal pornography:
Pornography in general is not forbidden but there exist videos that show persons who are under age. According to this it is illegal to do, to watch or to publish such videos. Public authorities try to find websistes where are illegal pornographical videos are posted and then ban those.
Cyberbullying:
Cyberbullying describes the depression of other people with the aid of electronically communicative devices by one single person or whole groups via Internet like in chatrooms or instant messengers. More information you will get from …
Unconscious crime
If you surf on the Internet you can easily make yourself criminal without knowing or noticing it. It is criminal to send or receive music or videos via instant messengers such as ICQ or to download them on websites because these files are under copyright (law).
Many people use this to get music without paying money and without knowing that it is illegal.
How can I protect myself from criminals on the Internet?
DO NOT open e-mails whose senders you do not know.
- Use your common sense before you open shady websites.
- Deactivate the HTML-address and “Java-Script” at your e-mail programme.
- E-mail filters that are put in some anti-virus software can uncover and eliminate those specious messages.
